About Swinging Bridge

Swinging Bridge is a refreshing cold spring nestled along the Piney River in Tennessee. This primitive swimming hole offers a blend of serene river views and invigorating chilly waters beneath a quaint suspension bridge. The natural setting invites you to immerse yourself in the peaceful rhythm of the flowing river and forest surroundings.

Getting There

Reach Swinging Bridge by driving about a mile on Shut In Gap Road to the Piney River Picnic Area, where limited parking is available. From here, cross the road and ascend a wooden stairway to the trailhead, then follow a 2.2-mile moderately challenging trail along the Piney River. Expect a 45-minute walk through scenic woodland before arriving at the bridge.

What to Expect

The water around the swinging bridge is crisp and cool, perfect for cooling off in summer’s heat. Deep swimming holes form naturally near the suspension bridge, creating inviting spots to dive in. The area remains relatively quiet due to the moderate hike, but it can draw small crowds during peak season. Facilities are minimal, emphasizing a raw, undisturbed experience in the outdoors.

Tips for Visitors

Plan your visit in summer for the most comfortable swimming temperatures and bring sturdy footwear for the trail. Carry plenty of water and snacks, as there are no amenities beyond the parking area. Parking space is limited, so arrive early to secure a spot, and remember this is a fee-free spot—respect the natural environment to keep it pristine.
