About Shangri-La

Shangri-La is a vibrant cold spring nestled along the South Yuba River in California. This hybrid spot combines easy accessibility with refreshing waters and natural rock formations, creating a lively swimming experience. Its boulder-strewn pools and natural slides offer an exhilarating scene rare among hot springs in California.

Getting There

To reach Shangri-La, take Nevada City’s RT 49 northwest to the bridge crossing the South Yuba River. Parking is limited, so arrive early to secure a spot. From the parking area, it’s a short walk—about 8 minutes—down to the main swimming area beneath the RT 49 bridge, or a slightly longer stroll upstream to find quieter swimming holes.

What to Expect

The water here is cool and invigorating, perfect for beating the summer heat. The area below the bridge buzzes with activity due to its unique swimming tunnels and natural slides formed by ancient boulders. Expect a high-energy atmosphere with plenty of visitors sharing space. Upstairs, the river slows for a more tranquil dip with fewer crowds.

Tips for Visitors

Visit Shangri-La in the summer for the warmest weather and best swimming conditions. Bring water shoes to tackle slippery rocks safely and pack a towel and sunscreen. Since parking is limited and the main spot fills quickly, plan to arrive early. There’s no fee, but respect the area by leaving no trace and sharing the popular California swimming hole kindly.
