About Rock Garden

Rock Garden offers a rugged swimming experience along the Cheat River in West Virginia. This cold spring spot features a natural collection of large rocks that create deep pools, inviting you to dive into clear, refreshing water. The wild river setting adds an adventurous edge, making it a distinctive choice among hot springs in West Virginia and swimming holes throughout the state.

Getting There

You reach Rock Garden by a short roadside pull-off along Route 72, about 5.8 miles south of the intersection with Route 7. Parking is limited to this small roadside area. From there, a brief 5-minute walk leads down to the riverbank. The trail is straightforward but unpaved, so wear sturdy shoes for the descent.

What to Expect

The water remains cold year-round, perfect for cooling off on hot summer days. The Cheat River's currents can be strong and unpredictable—always assess conditions before entering. The atmosphere is peaceful and rarely crowded, allowing you to connect with nature in a calm, primitive setting. Facilities are nonexistent, so the spot feels untouched and raw.

Tips for Visitors

Visit during summer when weather warms the air but keep in mind the chilly water temperature. Bring water shoes for walking on rocks and be cautious about river currents to stay safe. There is no fee to access Rock Garden, but pack out all trash since there are no amenities or trash bins here.
