About Koaie Canyon

Koaie Canyon offers a raw and invigorating experience among Hawaii’s natural wonders. This cold spring is nestled in Waimea Canyon, surrounded by rugged cliffs and lush greenery. The crisp, refreshing waters invite you to cool off after traversing the canyon’s dramatic terrain, making it a standout among hot springs in Hawaii for those who crave a primitive encounter with nature.

Getting There

Reaching Koaie Canyon requires a challenging hike on the Kukui Trail, which starts about three-quarters of a mile past the 8-Mile Marker on Highway 550. This strenuous trail descends the west side of Waimea Canyon and takes over an hour to complete. Parking near the trailhead is limited, and you'll need to walk roughly 15 minutes from the lot to the spring itself.

What to Expect

The cold, clear pools of Koaie Canyon offer a refreshing respite amid the warm Hawaiian climate. Expect a serene atmosphere with minimal crowds, thanks to the demanding hike. Facilities are non-existent, allowing you to fully immerse yourself in the untouched landscape and tranquil swimming holes that stud the canyon path.

Tips for Visitors

Wear sturdy hiking shoes and bring plenty of water, as the trek is strenuous and the trail can be slippery. Aim for early morning visits to avoid midday heat and enhance your chances of solitude. There are no fees, but pack out all trash and respect the fragile ecosystem of this remote spot.
